In 2011, Suroosh Alvi obtained a rare glimpse into the embattled Gaza Strip, providing an opportunity to witness life under Hamas rule. Previously, in 2007, Alvi had attempted to enter Gaza through the Israeli-controlled Erez Crossing but was unsuccessful due to the violent conflict between the rival Palestinian factions of Hamas and Fatah for control of this small land strip. Hamas eventually emerged victorious. The change came in 2011 when the post-Mubarak government of Egypt began allowing a limited number of people to enter Gaza through their Rafah Crossing. Seizing this opportunity, Alvi was able to access the region, a significant moment for his reporting.
